Fire & Ice: The Cinderblock Rules for Sulcata Housing

Sulcatas come from the Sahel—the hottest, driest area in Africa. Some regions there don’t see rain for years. Because of this, their skin is resistant to fluid loss, but they are incredibly sensitive to dampness. In captivity, they cannot be allowed to get both chilled and wet.

The “Fortress” Strategy

Because these tortoises grow to be 100+ pounds, you need housing that is essentially indestructible.

  • Solid Fencing: We recommend several layers of concrete blocks. If a sulcata can see through a fence, they will spend their entire day trying to plow through it or burrow under it.
  • Indoor/Outdoor Balance: Sulcatas should only live outdoors if you provide a dry, heated house they can retire to at night. If they won’t go in on their own, be prepared to physically move a 90-pound animal—which is no small feat!

Susan’s Non-Negotiable Fire Rule:

"Never, ever use heat lamps or ceramic bulbs. They cause fires frequently. We have seen too many tragedies. Instead, use radiant heat panels screwed into the roof and 'pig blankets' (Kane heat pads) on the floor. Neither should ever be covered with hay or substrate."

🐢 A Quick Note from our team:

While many of the stories, photos, and life-saving care tips found in our Resource Hub were born during our 35 years at our Malibu, California sanctuary, please note that as of late 2025, American Tortoise Rescue no longer operates a physical sanctuary location.

Don’t worry—the mission hasn’t skipped a beat! Our beloved resident “shellebrities” are enjoying their golden years at Turtle and Tortoise Rescue of Arroyo Grande up the coast, and our work has shifted entirely to global advocacy, education, and shellebration. While we no longer take in new surrenders at a physical site, we are more dedicated than ever to helping you “shellebrate” and protect turtles in your own backyard!

A global movement by American Tortoise Rescue® dedicated to protecting turtles and tortoises and their habitats around the world.
