How can I tell if a turtle is wild or domestic?
Wild turtles typically have weathered shells and are found in natural habitats. Domestic turtles are often found in urban areas far from water or natural habitat. When in doubt, contact a local wildlife expert.
Should I relocate a turtle crossing the road?
Yes, but only in the direction it was already heading. Turtles have home ranges and will repeatedly try to cross to reach their destination if moved back.
Can I keep a wild turtle as a pet?
No. Wild turtles should never be kept as pets. They may carry diseases, won't adapt to captivity well, and removing them harms wild populations. Consider adopting from a rescue instead.
How long do turtles live?
Depending on the species, turtles can live 20-100+ years. This is why turtle ownership is a serious, lifelong commitment.
What do turtles eat?
Diet varies by species. Aquatic turtles are often omnivores eating fish, insects, and plants. Tortoises are primarily herbivores. Always research your specific species' dietary needs.
